Last week the NFL released the official invite list for this year’s Combine. We did some research, crunched the numbers, and found quite a few interesting trends and data points. Here’s a link to some or our prior findings with the Combine.

2019 Official Invite List – Total players 338

Combine Position stats Q&A: 

How many ran track or threw shot/discus in high school?

Approx 60% – 203/338

How many offensive linemen threw shot put / discus in high school?

Approx 52%

What position group had the highest track participation?

Running back 85%, 24 of 28 invites ran track in high school.

What position group had the highest mix of basketball and track high school athletes?

Wide receiver 85%, 30 ran track and 29 played basketball.

What position group had the highest basketball participation? 

Tight end 95%

And the defensive line? What did they do in high school?

21/33 D-line invites threw shot put or discus. Overall 85% 28/33 did another sport in high school.

What about the 18 invited quarterbacks? Did most of them specialize?

Nope. At least 13 of them played basketball, baseball, ran track or some combination.

And the linebackers? 

Roughly 80% played another sport, with track and field being most popular at 48%.

Last but not least the corners and safeties…did a lot of them do track?

Yes. 83% of cornerbacks ran high school track…while 72% of safeties ran track.
